Celebrating Matariki across Hawksbury

Residents and staff came together to honour Matariki through a wide variety of activities designed to celebrate culture, strengthen relationships, and create lasting memories. Matariki is an important opportunity to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to the future, and our celebrations reflected these values throughout the organisation.

Sarah and Lonaye travelled across our Mosgiel homes bringing treats, chocolates, activities, and opportunities for residents and staff to connect. This mini roadshow created excitement and ensured everyone had the chance to participate in the celebrations. Residents proudly showed off their homes decorations and creative work.

Along with the Christchurch Resident Advisory Group members, Hawksbury also hosted a pop-up Matariki celebration at the Christchurch office, sharing kai, educational resources, and information about the significance of Matariki. Colouring books, activity packs, and decorations helped create a fun and engaging atmosphere while supporting learning about Māori culture and traditions.

Across our homes, residents enjoyed themed dinners, shared kai and outings. Homes were decorated with Matariki displays, stars, and artwork.

Education was an important part of this year's celebrations. Residents learned about the meaning of Matariki, the significance of the star cluster, and the values of remembrance, connection, and renewal that sit at the heart of the Māori New Year. Information packs were printed and delivered to Mosgiel homes and at the Christchurch pop up, this education was led by Resident Advisory Group member, Matthew.

Matariki reminded us of the importance of coming together, celebrating our diverse cultures, strengthening relationships, and creating opportunities for everyone to belong. Thank you to all the residents and staff, we are whanau, Together, we created an occasion with learning, laughter, connection, and community spirit.
