Greymouth Holiday

7th – 10th May 2018

Erica and Colin

We left for the Greymouth Holiday on the 7th May and started our journey towards Lewis pass. We had a few stops on the way for toilet and a stretch of our legs. We were taking our time due to the weather conditions and being behind traffic. We reached Greymouth just after 7pm. We stopped and got some fish and chips for dinner. We reached our amazing accommodation and settled in for the night. We were all so very tired we had dinner and a birthday cake for Erica as it was her birthday. We headed to bed and all enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

The following morning, we all arose early to begin our exploring. We met the friendly Weka called William and we feed him. William came and saw us each day. The weather wasn’t too flash, so we decided to go to Hokitika for the day. It was a short drive to Hokitika where we explored around the township. We took a photo of us under the Hokitika sign made from drift wood on the beach. We then went and watched some Jade, bone and stone carving. We continued to explore Hokitika. After we headed back towards Greymouth and continued our exploring and sightseeing, heading back to our accommodation later in the afternoon where we cooked a home cooked meal, this was enjoyed by all, some even had seconds. We spent some quality time together this evening before parting ways and heading to bed.

On our last day in Greymouth we headed to Shantytown for the day. We packed a picnic for our lunch and hit the road. Once there we booked in for an old-time photo and then we explored the Shantytown township. Once it was time for our photo to be taken we got dressed up in old style clothing and posed for the photo, this was awesome. Afterwards we had some time to spare before we had to board the train down to the gold panning station. We all enjoyed an ice cream while we waited. Once it was time to board the train we all jumped on board and took our seats. We got to the gold panning and were given the demo of what to do. We all had help from the staff till we no longer wanted to do it then the staff showed us what needed to be done and gave us our gold at the end of it. We stopped for our picnic lunch before continuing. We headed back and had a rest before heading out for dinner. We went to Armidillos restaurant for our final night’s dinner and the staff were amazing and the food was delicious and the desserts Yummy. We headed back afterwards with very full tummy’s and rested for the rest of the night watching a DVD.

The final morning, we all helped clean up before loading the car up again and making tracks back to Christchurch. We went via Arthurs pass this time and stopped in Arthurs pass for lunch. Man was it cold there, so we had something hot to keep us warm. We made it back to Christchurch just after 3.30pm.

It was an amazing holiday and everyone enjoyed the break away on the Wonderful West Coast.
